Switzerland rejects strict neutrality: Voters clear path for deeper ties with NATO and EU

With over 70% voting "No," Switzerland's historic referendum paves the way for enhanced defense collaboration, amid strong criticism from left-wing and right-wing opposition.

Switzerland is currently reflecting on the outcome of a pivotal two-day referendum concerning the future of the nation’s traditional foreign policy. The overwhelming rejection of a proposal to strictly define and enforce perpetual military neutrality has been warmly welcomed by both the Swiss Federal Government and the European Union. Conversely, the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP) and radical left-wing parties have reacted strongly against what they view as a fundamental shift in foreign policy.

In an exclusive statement to Berwarnews, Timeo Antognini, Co-President of the Swiss Labour Party (PdA), warned that the vote opens the door to increasing military alignment with Western blocs.

Clear majority across all cantons

The results of the referendum, which directly impact Switzerland’s international stance, were decisive. Voters rejected the constitutional amendment proposed by the SVP and allied left-wing groups by a resounding 70.15%. Notably, not a single one of Switzerland’s 26 cantons voted in favor of the initiative.

Analysts note that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and international sanctions against Moscow heavily influenced Swiss voter sentiment, prompting a re-evaluation of strict neutrality in a changing global security landscape.

Strategic implications for Swiss foreign policy

The outcome grants the Federal Government in Bern greater flexibility in foreign policy and security strategy. In practice, this decision enables Switzerland to pursue strategic security partnerships with organizations such as NATO within the framework of European defense.

Domestically, the rejection is seen as a major political defeat for the SVP, with a large segment of the public viewing the initiative as internal political propaganda.

Timeo Antognini to Berwarnews: “Alignment with NATO will deepen”

Left-wing opponents, however, view the outcome through an anti-imperialist lens. Speaking exclusively to Berwarnews, PdA Co-President Timeo Antognini emphasized that the initiative was an important attempt to curb the influence of imperialist blocs.

“For the Swiss Party of Labour, this initiative was an important tool aimed at building a peaceful and solidary Switzerland. It demanded the rejection of Switzerland’s gradual integration into NATO and the automatic implementation of arbitrary sanctions. These sanctions adversely affect the working class—both here and in other countries. The result itself shows that Switzerland will continue its policy of rapprochement with NATO and the European Union, and the struggle against this line will become harder”
