Thousands of supporters of the Basque language gathered in Pamplona (Iruñea) on Saturday for a rally organized by Kontseilua, a leading Basque language advocacy organization. Participants called for stronger measures that would allow people to use Basque more naturally in everyday life and argued that speakers should be able to live, work, study, and access public services in Basque without facing constant obstacles.
The demonstration brought together people from different generations and regions of the Basque Country. Organizers said that despite progress made in recent decades, many Basque speakers still encounter difficulties when trying to use the language in public administration, education, healthcare, and other areas of daily life.
Speakers at the event emphasized the need for stronger language policies, wider official recognition of Basque, and continued community involvement to secure the language’s future. They stressed that the responsibility for protecting and promoting Basque should not fall solely on individual speakers but should also be supported by public institutions and governments.
While acknowledging the challenges facing minority languages, participants delivered an optimistic message. They highlighted the strength of Basque-language schools, cultural organizations, and community initiatives as evidence that support for the language remains strong.
The rally concluded with a call for collective action to ensure that future generations can use Basque freely and confidently in all aspects of life. Organizers said achieving that goal will require political commitment, legal protections, and sustained social engagement across the Basque Country.
Language movement sets growth target
Kontseilua also referred to its new language strategy, “The Struggle for Revival of 2036” which was unveiled on May 27. The plan aims to increase the number of Basque speakers by 300,000 over the next decade. Drawing inspiration from successful language revival programs in Wales and Catalonia, the initiative seeks to strengthen the use of Basque and accelerate the growth of the Basque-speaking community.
According to language reports, the number of fluent Basque speakers currently increases by around 15,000 people each year. Through the new strategy, Kontseilua hopes to double that figure to 30,000 new speakers annually. Organizers say reaching this goal will require stronger public policies, institutional support, and expanded opportunities for people to use Basque in their daily lives.
