The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned of a worsening humanitarian situation in the Kurdish city of Kobani, saying the city has been cut off from the outside world and faces increasing shortages of essential supplies.
In a statement published on its website on Saturday, OCHA said humanitarian partners operating in Kobani are raising serious concerns about a potential deterioration in conditions. The agency reported emerging shortages of food and other key items, while health facilities, though still functioning, are facing a lack of medicines.
OCHA noted that United Nations teams are holding discussions with authorities in Aleppo to explore possible ways to provide support. The agency stressed that the UN and its partners are coordinating closely with local actors and authorities to conduct further assessments and facilitate humanitarian access to the city.
According to the statement, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners are currently providing medical supplies, and life-saving care for the wounded, as well as for children and pregnant women.
