Toward a pluralist Kurdish politics free from war and conflict

Any form of monolithic and dogmatic ideology is the enemy of democracy. The adherents of every idea and belief must intensify their struggle for their own aims and cause, and organise themselves. No one should build their success on the failure of others. The door of our hearts must always be open to one another; this is how success is achieved.

Mir Celadet Bedirxan, after the experience he had during the Xoybûn movement, abandoned political affairs and turned to linguistic matters. In the first issue of Hawar, he wrote: “Hawar has left politics to the citizens societies. Let them be busy with politics.” To this day, no one has asked why Mîr Celadet Bedirxan made such a choice. I would say that he had grown weary of the intrigues of politics, which is why he distanced himself from it.

According to some sources, the efforts of the Xoybûn failed due to disagreements and divisions among the Kurdish clans. Again for the same reason, the French said to Mir Kamuran Bedirxan, “What do you want from us, how can we help you? He wants there to be a chair of Kurdish studies at a university. On this basis, the door of academia is opened to the Kurdish language and Kurdology. The Kurdish Institute of Paris is founded on this basis. Of course, these statements are not supported by any written documents, which is why they remain somewhat like rumours. Nevertheless, we can now easily say that the preference of Mir Celadet and Mir Kamûran was the right one. They left behind a rich legacy, and we are pleased and proud of their work.

Nowadays, Kurdish politics has taken on the colours of the Kurdish emirates and clans. In the past, our autonomous regional rulers each had a principality under their own authority and patronage; no one paid any heed to the calls and cries of Ahmadi Khani. Moreover, the divisions and conflicts among them served as support and assistance for the occupiers, who were able to build their own system on the basis of these divisions and conflicts and easily govern Kurdistan.

Meanwhile, many political circles—and even some intellectuals whose primary activity is writing political articles and essays—have abandoned more constructive pursuits and instead devote themselves to fighting one another. This war is also generally waged in the language of the occupiers. They also conduct their politics in the language that the Turks call ‘ortak dilimiz’, that is, in Turkish. Turkish thugs and lackeys also write comments (!) full of threats and insults under their posts. If we conduct our writing in Kurdish, we will both advance our own language and also teach a few fascists it through our efforts. Of course, we must refrain from writing in languages other than Kurdish.

I say we must now learn to be pluralistic and diverse. We must be towards our Kurdish brothers and sisters just as kind and tolerant as we are towards other people. Alongside this, no one is obliged to challenge another’s opinions or beliefs; let everyone live and work according to their own convictions. The Kurdish homeland is vast and wide, with millions of people within it; a great many Kurds are still serving their enemies. We must turn our attention to these people and win them over. No one should be attacked for their ideas and beliefs, and our criticism must remain within moral boundaries.

Any form of monolithic and dogmatic ideology is the enemy of democracy. The proponent of any ideology must promote their struggle for their own aims and cause, and organise themselves. No one should build their success on the failure of others. The doors of our hearts must always be open to one another; that is how success is achieved. I do not wish to offer advice or counsel to anyone; I simply wanted to write down my own thoughts and opinions on the matter. To be honest, I don’t want to talk too much about politics, but one cannot escape it completely, because everything is political. Until the next post, stay well.
